Most wallpaper still starts life as a licensed pattern — bought from a catalogue, printed on a fixed-width roll, and repeated every few metres because the roll demands it. That was never how we wanted to work. From the beginning, La Belle Maison's own collections have been designed rather than sourced, and for the last two years, that design process has leaned heavily on AI image generation — specifically Midjourney — directed entirely in-house by our founder and creative director, Alexandra Kraft.
This isn't AI replacing a designer. It's AI as a very fast, very flexible paintbrush, in the hands of someone who still makes every real decision about colour, composition and mood.
From brief to brushstroke: how the process starts
Every original design begins with a brief, whether it comes from a client's reference image, a mood board, or simply a gap Alexandra has spotted in our own catalogue — a colourway we don't have yet, a motif nobody else in Dubai is offering. From there, that brief is translated into a series of highly specific Midjourney prompts: not just "jungle wallpaper," but exact instructions on palette, botanical species, lighting, composition and aspect ratio, written to produce a mural that will actually work at full wall scale, not just as a pretty square thumbnail.
A single brief typically produces three to five prompt variations, each pushing the idea in a slightly different direction. That range matters — the first output is almost never the final design. It's a starting point for Alexandra to react to, refine, and push further.
Why Midjourney, and not stock art
The honest answer is control. A stock illustration or licensed pattern comes as-is — you either like it or you don't. An AI-generated starting point can be iterated on in minutes: a palette pushed warmer, a composition rebalanced, a motif swapped out entirely, all without waiting weeks for a new licensed collection to become available. For a Dubai market that increasingly wants a wall nobody else has, that speed is the whole point.
The tool is fast. The taste isn't automated — that part is still entirely Alexandra's.
Refining a design with a human eye
This is the stage that actually takes the time. Raw AI output is reviewed, cropped, colour-corrected and, where needed, hand-finished for texture and depth before it is ever considered a finished La Belle Maison original. Anything that doesn't hold up at full mural scale, or reads as generic rather than distinctive, gets sent back for another pass. Only designs Alexandra is genuinely happy to put her name to make it into a live collection.
The same process applies to fully bespoke commissions. If a client sends a reference image or description, our team develops it into prompt variations the same way, refines the strongest result with the client, and only then treats it exactly like any other mural — scaled to the wall, printed on premium non-woven material, and installed by our own Dubai-based team.
From screen to wall
An AI-originated design doesn't skip any of the steps a hand-illustrated one would go through. Once a design is approved, it's scaled precisely to the client's wall dimensions — not stretched or tiled, but composed as one continuous piece — printed to order, and installed by the same in-house team that handles every La Belle Maison commission. The result reads as a considered mural, not a computer-generated pattern; most clients never guess the design began as a prompt at all.
